Our Historic Meetinghouse
The centerpiece of Sharon's Historic District is the Meetinghouse
of the Unitarian Church of Sharon. The first Meetinghouse in Sharon was
a simple frame building erected in 1742. It was the center of all activities
for Pole Plain residents (Sharon). Records are not clear as to where the
building was located.
In 1787 a second and more substantial Meetinghouse was erected on land
donated by the Reverend Philip Curtis who served the congregation for
55 years. In 1811 Paul Revere cast and installed a bell which hangs in
the steeple of our present building. Today's Meetinghouse was erected
in 1842, and includes timbers saved from the 1787 building.
In 1813 a group withdrew from the congregation to form the Baptist Society
in Sharon (First Baptist Church). In 1821 almost a dozen more left to
form the Christian Society (First Congregational Church). Those remaining
became the nucleus for what is the Unitarian Church of Sharon, a vital,
growing congregation and a member church of the Unitarian Universalist
Association.
At the 1992 annual meeting of the Unitarian Church of Sharon a committee
of church members and concerned local residents, the Trustees
of the Meetinghouse, was established. This group was charged with
the tasks of dispersing funds to preserve the Meetinghouse and its grounds
and to raise additional monies to continue the Fund. In the ensuing years
the committee has raised in excess of $20,000 through annual Winetastings,
Silent Auctions, and other donations.
We continue in the tradition of the Meetinghouses in our history, attempting
to serve as a center for many of Sharon's cultural and social activities.
Our sanctuary and downstairs vestry are available for rental
for special occasions.
