Committee on Ministry Our formal charge (from the By-Laws): The purpose of the Committee on Ministry is to strengthen the quality of ministry within the congregation. It serves as a sounding board for the Minister, maintains a channel of communication between the Minister and the Congregation, and nurtures the shared ministry of the congregation. Ah, there’s the pivotal phrase, “shared ministry.” In a recent sermon, Rev. Deborah Cayer spoke about why it’s important to move ahead with the a discussion of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) capital campaign consultant’s report, and to move ahead with the project itself. Deborah wrote, “it’s not about accomplishing things on a to do list, or building just for the sake of building. …this project is coming out of a deep sense of how we want to honor the spirit of life and love that exists among us.” Legend has it that when planning the Magic Kingdom in Florida, Walt Disney said “build the castle first.” The castle was where the magic would be, and once built it would provide inspiration for doing all the hard work it would take to make the rest of the Magic Kingdom a reality. This is a metaphor for moving ahead on the basis of a vision, to find the resolve and determination needed to make big – positive – changes in our lives. “The spirit of life and love that exists among us” is our shared ministry. It’s an intangible made real both intellectually and tangibly, in book discussions, circle suppers, greeting those who make it Sunday services and calls to people who can’t/don’t, religious education for young and older, washing window screens, signing postcards about Darfur, vacuuming flooded carpeting, organizing the hymnals in their racks and recycling orders of service left behind by rushed congregants. The project to give a home to all of our dreams – sufficient, accessible space for religious education, for our staff, for the community coming to concerts, plays, discussions - is the castle. It can provide the venue to make everything else we do a greater reality for ourselves and for our community, both local and far away. Another aspect of shared ministry is that you may have a question or concern about the workings of a specific committee or a specific staff member. The obvious step would be to go to the committee or staffer; if for some reason you don’t feel comfortable doing so, or if you have broader-ranging questions, the Committee on Ministry welcomes your input. EMail us and let us know what’s on your mind. Edele Panessidi, Chair
