Interim Ministry FAQ

What is an interim minister?

An interim minister is a seasoned parish minister with special training and experience in helping congregations in transition. Interim ministers serve for no longer than two years. For more information, see http://www.uua.org/leaders/leaderslibrary/interimministry/16230.shtml

How is a search committee for an interim minister different from a search committee for a permanent settled minister?

Our bylaws provide that the search committee for a settled minister is elected by the congregation. A search for a settled minister can take more than a year. An interim search committee is appointed by the board. The board chooses an interim based on a recommendation from the interim search committee. The interim search will be complete before services recommence after the summer break.

What is the charge for the interim search committee?

To learn about the procedure for securing an interim minister through the Unitarian Universalist Association. To complete the application. To review the ministerial packets provided by the UUA in response to the application. To vet the applicants and to make a recommendation to the board of trustees.

Who should serve on the interim search committee?

To the greatest extent possible, the interim search committee should reflect the various cohorts within the congregation: short and long term members, humanists and theists, parents and non-parents, men and women, gay people and straight people, people of color and white people… all without becoming too large.

If I'm not on the committee, can I still have input about what we want in an interim minister?

To be sure. Talk to or email the president or the chair of the committee. Attend informal sessions with the committee.

If I want to be on the committee, what should I do?

Talk to Edele Panessidi or Valerie White.
