Conversations at the Meetinghouse

Announcing the next Conversations at the Meetinghouse: Friday April 1st , 7 PM. Some decades ago the Red Sox had Massachusetts born Jerry Remy at second base and New Hampshire born Carleton Fiske catching. Today, the rosters of the Sox and other major league teams are filled with Hispanic surnames like Rodriguez and Martinez from a variety of countries. When and why did this happen? What does it say about the cultural changes the United States and the world? Is baseball still the “American Pastime?” Come to the next Conversation at the Meetinghouse and hear Northeastern Professor Alan Klein answer these and other questions. A social anthropologist with degrees from SUNY at Buffalo, Dr. Klein has written “Growing the Game: The Globalization of Major League Baseball,” and “Sugarball: The American Game, The Dominican Dream,” as well as many other articles on sport and culture. This is the 4th in a series of discussions held on the first Friday of the month at the Unitarian Church of Sharon at 7 PM. Free and open to the public.

Easter Can Hunt

Some people hunt for hard boiled eggs. Some people hunt for chocolate eggs. But at the Unitarian Church of Sharon, our children hunt for canned goods for the Ilse Marks Food Pantry in Stoughton. On Easter Sunday, April 24, that mischievous Easter Bunny will hide cans all over the church grounds. At the beginning of coffee hour, the children will line up in the vestry near the kitchen (front door) and, once the signal is given, head outdoors to see how many cans they can find. Children will be encouraged to bring the cans to the main entrance of the church, where they may opt to be showered with lucky glitter. Very young children (through preschool) will have exclusive can hunting rights to the gated playground area.

Sharon-Stoughton Food Pantry

The Sharon-Stoughton Food Pantry provides nutritious food those in need — and there are many in our area. The Pantry purchases cereals and grains in bulk, but relies on donations for canned goods. Our congregation is one of a few whom the Pantry can count on for regular contributions. So when you do your weekly shopping, please purchase a can or two of soup, fruit, vegetables or meat. You may leave them in the basket in the second floor coat closet and a volunteer will deliver them to the Pantry.

Blood Donations Needed

Right now there is a serious blood shortage nationwide, and it's particularly critical in Massachusetts where our many hospitals depend on the supply. If you are in good health, you can help by giving blood at any blood donation center. To find a donation center near home or work, contact the Massachusetts Red Cross or Rhode Island Red Cross. Or call the Red Cross at 1-800-354-0025.
