Spice It Up!: 2006 Canvass

2006 Church Financial Review

March is a good time for Canvass. Hope is in the air even if snow is on the ground. Winter, with its renewal and planning, is ready to give way to the excitement of spring. We are headed for the budgeting process. And we are ready for a little spice!

What is Canvass? Members and Friends of the UCS give of our time and our talents in caring ways. We also give generously of our money through monthly pledging. (We follow the UUA 2-3% of annual income recommendation, but we welcome gifts of all sizes!) Annually we meet in small groups to consider what this congregation means to us. At the end of the evening we make a financial pledge for the next year beginning July 2006. Last year our pledge amounts increased almost 17%; a few individuals doubled their pledge! We are living the results of last year’s successful Stone Soup Canvass! Thank you to all.

What does Canvass do? Our Board and committee leaders, our minister and our DRE create programs, design events, and enthusiastically bring them to fruition. Our pledges make our programs possible. Spicing up the budget means we can do even more of what we value. This year we want to take the success of Stone Soup and kick it up a notch! Spicing up the canvass means spicing up the programs, fairly compensating the staff, and reaching out to the broader community with liberal messages of hope and caring.

What do we value? Last January the Futures Task Force led us in identifying our 5 top values and worked to create a mission. Revisiting these during Canvass can help guide our generous spirits and our mindful budget-making.

Where do you see these values living today in the congregation?
and where would you like to Spice it up?
1) Tolerance/Diversity; 2) Social Justice; 3) Children and children’s RE; 4) Opportunities for Intentionality and Mindfulness and Engagement; and 5) Seeking Spiritual and Intellectual Balance.

Where and how does our newly crafted mission live in our hearts?
How do we practice it; how do we wear it?

Mission of the Unitarian Church of Sharon:
We gather as a liberal religious community,
honoring our differences,
to support one another
as we grow in mind and spirit and reach out to serve the world.

Join us for an evening of spicy conversation, chili and dessert on one of these dates:
Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18 from 7:00–8:30 or
