Expressing Good-Byes

In addition to “Heartfelt Conversations” there will be other opportunities to express ourselves as we begin to say good-bye to Rev. Deborah Cayer who is leaving the congregation at the end of June.

On Sunday, June 1 at noon there will be an opportunity to create a prayer flag. The colors on traditional prayer flags are reminders of essential elements that support our lives: earth, air, fire, water, clouds. Animals depicted on them represent essential human characteristics: courage, determination, strength, wisdom, passion. On June 1 we’ll ask, what color is your frustration and sadness, your love and hope? How do you want to travel through this time? What do you leave behind and what do you bring with you? What images arise in your mind and heart when you think about these things?

Traditional prayer flags release their love, wisdom, intention and blessings to the world as they constantly move in the wind; as they become tattered and worn they become a reminder that all of life is constantly in the process of change.

After we make them, we’ll tie our prayer flags together as a reminder of the solidarity shared in this community, and we’ll display them on the church grounds. As they change, they’ll be a reminder of our shared sadness and grief, and also our shared love, hope, courage, strength and joy in this time of great change.

And then we’ll lighten things up with some fun. There will be a Children’s Tea Party with the Minister at noon on June 8, followed later in the day by an Open House Reception for adults from the congregation and community from 2-5 pm. Details will follow as planning takes place, but we’ll need lots of help! To get involved contact Mare Parker-O’Toole or Joyce Bramhall about the prayer flag event, Ellen Schoenfeld or Cindy Wilson about the adult party, and Louise Marcoux about the Children’s Tea Party. And on Sunday, June 15 we’ll have our traditional “Fathers as Chefs” cook-out and Potluck after church.

Ministers come and go; buildings rise and fall, but the congregation remains. Please join fellow congregation members to help all of us affirm and strengthen our relationships as we enter a time of great change. Questions? Contact members of the Committee on Ministry, Edele Panessidi or Irving Post.
