Church Financial Review: 2006
By Peter Raskin, Finance Chair
Over the next couple of months our community will be talking about budgets,
income and expenses. At first glance, money may not seem very exciting,
spiritual or church-like, but the Board of Trustees believes these discussions
are an integral part of our ministry. We are stewards of the Unitarian
Church of Sharon which consists of a beautiful and historic building,
a community of individuals and families and committed professional staff.
We come together on Sundays, participate in social activities, volunteer,
sing in the choir and make sure our kids participate in religious education
because we have faith that these activities make a difference in our
lives and the world we live in. Faith may bring us together, but faith
can only go so far; many of the church-like things we want cost money.
As we think about what we want from our church community, I think it
is important to understand how we spend our money. Our money decisions
will translate into programs that reflect our priorities.
Our fiscal year runs from July 1 June 30. For Fiscal Year ending June
30, 2006, we have budgeted to spend approximately $134,000. Over 70%
of our budgeted expenses pays staff (minister, director of religious
education, sexton, musician, choir director, administrator, and bookkeeper).
The rest pays insurance, utilities, maintenance, supplies, technology,
etc.
We determine the amount we have to spend based on our projected income,
which is approximately $132,000 for FY 2006. Our income is derived primarily
from pledges from our community. 80% of our budgeted income will come
from your financial commitment to the Unitarian Church of Sharon. The
rest of our income comes from fundraising and from our investments.
Obviously, your financial pledge is vital in helping us be good stewards
of our church community and helping us minister together. Our dreams
and vision for the Unitarian Church of Sharon can be realized as we improve
and enhance our programs and invest in our staff. Money is an important
driver of our shared ministry.
Please call or email me with questions. Over the next month I plan to
hold informal meetings after church to discuss in detail church budgeting,
income and expenses.
