The Partner Church Program
While we think of Unitarian Universalism as an American
movement, there are indigenous Unitarians and Universalists in a number
of countries, including Romania, India the Phillipines, and some European and African countries. Together, they belong to a
loose organization known as the International Council of Unitarians and
Universalists, of which the UUA is also a member. Many of them operate
under adverse economic and political conditions.
The UU Partner Church Council is a grass-roots UU volunteer organization
which builds relationships between individual U.S. and Canadian congregations
and congregations elsewhere in the world. It began in Romania, as a collaboration
between American and Transylvanian Unitarians, and has now spread
to other countries.
The Unitarian Church of Sharon has been a member of the Partner Church
Council for nearly 20 years. The Partner Church Council works together
with the Unitarian Universalist Association to not only provide badly
needed economic support to Unitarians in other countries, but also to
learn from each other and develop mutual relationships. Recently, U.S.
funds helped build a dormitory and guest house for the largest Unitarian high school and housing for Unitarian theological students
at the seminary in Kolozsvar. A collaboration of several U.S. and Romanian
congregations has created a rural economic development program known as
Harvest Hope. A number of Eastern European Unitarian ministers and theological
students have been able to come to the U.S. to study, and one of our theological
schools supports an English teacher at the seminary in Kolozsvar. In partnering
with Gyulakuta, we are part of a large international effort that benefits
all sides.
The UU Partner Church Council maintains an extensive website at www.uupcc.org.
Visit it for more information about the Unitarians of Eastern Europe,
the kinds of partnerships that various congregations have taken on, the
many travel opportunities to visit our fellow Unitarians and the historic
sites of Unitarianism in Eastern Europe, and links the to websites of
other partner churches, including some in Romania.
