2007-2008 Religious Education Program

Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?
This year, the Religious Education program will encourage participants
to look backward, inward, and forward to understand themselves, this
community, and Unitarian Universalism more fully.
- What inspires us? What are our stories? Upon whose shoulders do we
stand?
- What gifts can we find within ourselves? What is the nature of this,
our beloved community?
- What are we, as individuals and as a community, called to do in this
troubled world?
We'll explore these questions through games and stories,
drama, art, and music, and social action projects. Questions and ideas
stirred by these Sunday morning experiences are intended to be brought
home and shared with family all week long.
Nursery (Infants through 2 years)
Care providers Sheila Francisco and Fernanda Alves create a warm, welcoming
environment for very young children.
Preschool (3, 4, and 5 year olds)
Chalice Children: What do I do in a Unitarian Universalist community?
Playful experiences affirm each individual child and build a sense of
belonging to a Unitarian Universalist community.
Kindergarten–Grade 1–Grade 2
Around the Church, Around the Year: Who is part of this Unitarian
Universalist community? How do we celebrate life's highs and lows? What
stories help us to make sense of our lives? Children will explore the
church building, the people who make up their church community, and all
that we do together through tours and interviews, play, crafts, and stories.
Grades 3 thru 5
We Believe (Fall): What do the UU principles mean? How have
people used the principles to guide their decisions? How can I? Games,
stories, crafts, and songs shape the children's exploration of the meaning
of UU principles in their daily lives.
In Our Hands (Winter/Spring): What is peace? What is fairness?
How can I, together with my group, bring more peace and fairness into
the world? Games, creative problem-solving, discussion, and crafts provide
opportunities for hands-on exploration of peace and social justice. The
group will also plan and implement a social justice project.
Junior Youth (Grades 6,7,8)
Coming of Age in Neighboring Faiths (Fall)
What does it mean to come of age: what do bar/bat mitzvah or confirmation
really mean? The group will explore how different religious traditions
mark the passage from religious childhood to religious adulthood.
Worship and Spiritual Practices (Winter)
What is worship? What makes something a spiritual practice? The group
will explore the components of worship and plan and carry out worship
services together. The group will also experience different spiritual
practices.
A Social Justice Toolbox (Spring)
What happens when I work to make my vision of justice a reality? What
changes in me? in the larger world?
The work of social justice involves both action and reflection. Members
will be encouraged to continue their social action projects, to reflect
alone upon the meaning of their action, and to share their thoughts about
their work and their developing faith.
Senior Youth (Grades 9-12)
Senior Youth programming covers five major components: worship, community
building, social action, learning, and leadership. These topics are incorporated
into discussions, projects, and activities developed by the Senior Youth
Team.
