Latest News from Religious Education

April 2010

What did you learn this year?

In this season of MCAS, with its focus on measurable outcomes, I imagine how we might develop a scorecard on religious education. In this fantasy, I challenge the metricians of this world to develop tools that could meaningfully capture the development of religious imagination or compassion, deep listening or cooperation with peers, the capacity to reflect or to listen to that still, small voice within. And then I wake from my daydream, happy that we already have other ways of learning about the religious journeys of children and youth.

One such opportunity is coming up on April 10, when children and youth will lead worship for the congregation and share something that matters to them. RE Sunday is our window into their world. What do they want adults in their beloved community to know about what they’ve been doing in their classes all year? Why is what they share important to them? There are many ways to find out.

My wish is that the children’s sharing will touch adults’ curiosity. The conversations between children and adults — conversations that spring from adult curiosity, gently-shared — affirm beloved community and move every participant in that conversation forward on his or her religious journey. Looking forward to April 10!

Blessings,

Louise

Easter Can Hunt

Some people hunt for hard boiled eggs. Some people hunt for chocolate eggs. But at the Unitarian Church of Sharon, our children hunt for canned goods for the Ilse Marks Food Pantry in Stoughton. On Easter Sunday, April 24, that mischievous Easter Bunny will hide cans all over the church grounds. At the beginning of coffee hour, the children will line up in the vestry near the kitchen (front door) and, once the signal is given, head outdoors to see how many cans they can find. Children will be encouraged to bring the cans to the main entrance of the church, where they may opt to be showered with lucky glitter. Very young children (through preschool) will have exclusive can hunting rights to the gated playground area.

Pysanky Workshops

Looking for a creative, meditative way to welcome the beginning of spring? Consider attending a pysanky workshop in April! The Ukrainian art of egg decoration offers you the chance to create richly colorful designs on the surface of an egg as you meditate on the joys of springtime.
