The Can Drive: A Report from our Third, Fourth, and Fifth Graders

March 2009

First we want to thank all the church congregation for their generosity toward the Stoughton-Sharon Food Pantry and to us.

We’re surprised that we reached our goal of 300 cans so quickly.

We all agree that understanding what it would be like to go to the food pantry inspired us to do more. When Henrietta Polanzak came to our church, it was a rude awakening to realize how much people need the food pantry. She gave us important background knowledge so that we knew what we were donating to.

In the beginning this project was a little overwhelming, but as we went along, it was easier to see our goal. Our slogan was "DO GOOD: DOnate cans; Give families fOOD." (The capital letters spell out DO GOOD)

Our sculpture of 413 cans, packets, and boxes of food was on display in the sanctuary from February 22 to March 1. We built the sculpture to create publicity in the town for our cause. We invited the press to photograph our sculpture to get the word out to the town. On March 1, we delivered our hard work to the Stoughton-Sharon Food Pantry.

We were glad to have helped in something that really matters. You never know how much the church congregation can do when it does it together!
