2008-2009 Religious Education Program

Religious Education at the Unitarian Church of Sharon

Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?
This year, the Religious Education program will encourage participants to look backward, inward, and forward to understand themselves, this community, and Unitarian Universalism more fully.

  • What inspires us? What are our stories? Upon whose shoulders do we stand?
  • What gifts can we find within ourselves? What is the nature of this, our beloved community?
  • What are we, as individuals and as a community, called to do in this troubled world?

We'll explore these questions through games and stories, drama, art, and music, and social action projects. Questions and ideas stirred by these Sunday morning experiences are intended to be brought home and shared with family all week long.

Nursery (Infants through 2 years)
Care provider Vanessa Desani creates a warm, welcoming environment for very young children.

Preschool-Kindergarten (3, 4, and 5 year olds)
Celebrating Me and My World helps young children enter into the Unitarian Universalist experience by appreciating what is special about themselves, their peers, their family, their community, and the wonderful world around them.

Grade 1–Grade 2
UU Superheroes (Fall): What makes a person heroic? How do people live out UU principles every day? Through story, song, games, and arts activities, children will learn about challenges big and small faced by some of our Unitarian and Universalist forebears – and learn how each of us can be a hero.

Our Whole Lives (Winter): Where do I come from? What makes a family? Children begin their lifelong journey into the deepest mysteries of life: birth and human relationships.

Grades 3 thru 5
Living The Promise (Fall, Winter): What does covenant mean? How have people come to an understanding of 'covenant'? Children explore the stories of the Hebrew Bible through games, drama, and big art. A Unitarian Universalist perspective on these stories emphasizes values relevant to children's daily lives.

Junior Youth (Grades 6,7,8)
In Our Hands (Fall): What is my vision of a perfect world? How might this vision be made real? Hands-on experience and cooperative games will be emphasized. The group will develop their own social justice projects.

A Social Justice Toolbox (Winter): What happens when I work to make my vision of justice a reality? What changes in me? in the larger world? The work of social justice involves both action and reflection. Members will be encouraged to continue their social action projects, to reflect alone upon the meaning of their action, and to share their thoughts about their work and their developing faith.

Grades 1-8 (Spring)
We Belong to the Bundle of Life: What does it mean to be part of beloved community? How can we lift up what is beautiful? Children and youth will explore the nexus of spirituality and creativity in community. Big art, drumming, creative movement, and singing will all figure in this exploration of art and worship. Children and youth will create and celebrate their own worship.

Senior Youth (Grades 9-12)
Senior Youth programming covers five major components: worship, community building, social action, learning, and leadership. These topics are incorporated into discussions, projects, and activities developed by the Senior Youth Team.
